Talalla is located on the Southern tip of Sri Lanka near the city of Matara. It is well connected to public transport. Transport to and from the airport can be arranged in advance with a driver from Talalla (recommended!). From the international airport in Colombo, it is a three-hour journey. Breathe in Life, my partners, will arrange all of this for you in advance to make your journey as stress-free as possible.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
This course is designed for students who are looking to immerse or teach yoga. The desire to teach is not a pre-requisite to take this course, however to uphold the integrity of this experience, I approach this with the mindset as though I’m training all of you to be the best teachers out there. It is my mission to teach with integrity, tradition and modernity in fusion with your personality and offerings. And to have fun! Light humour is key otherwise yoga can also get too serious. However, don’t expect a yoga retreat, this is also hard work in between ocean play.
This training will slightly vary from past trainings in that we will focus on bridging musculoskeletal anatomy/the physical body with the basic teachings of subtle anatomy/the intangible body.
We will study basic anatomy, anatomical terms/directions, the feet, knees, hips, SI joint, shoulders and the spine. What are joints? Tendons vs ligaments. What is fascia? We will learn the names and location of all the major bones and muscles associated with each joint and the types of issues commonly encountered in yoga and common injuries. The next layer – we also also look at the traditional chakra system and energy anatomy, and ask questions like: What are the nadis,vayus and chakras? How can we use these esoteric mappings accessible to all? How does energy move through the anatomical parts of us? How can we observe these layers in our own body? How can we observe injury/illness/stress in a student? What basic tools of asana, pranayama and meditation can we offer as a new teacher? What are our boundaries/general should-should-nots as teachers?
- The morning asana practice will be 2.5-3 hours in length, we begin with the foundation and build. My style is strong vinyasa, meaning long holds, alignment and a sprinkling of flow practices. I also am a “breath-centric” teacher, meaning we will always begin and end with some form of pranayama and meditation.
- Daily asana clinic of around 100 foundational postures, basic cueing and pedagogy
- Daily practice teaching of “bare bones” – massaging your “teachers voice” beginning with the basics and then building
- Learn the Sanskrit names of all postures
- We will also look briefly at an overview of yoga history to give you context where we come from
- We will read and discuss the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and Anatomy of the Spirit (one of the first books in N.A to pioneer discussion of chakra anatomy).
- We will review vinyasa karma – the art of basic sequencing for a vinyasa class
- Study what is pranayama, types of pranayama practices and Kundalini (this relates to the above).
- Why meditate? Mantras, chanting and more

The schedule…What to expect:
Tentatively, morning asana/pranayama/meditation is three-hours in length, followed by a two or three hour break to eat lunch, rest, swim/surf and enjoy the surroundings. The morning sessions typically run from 830am-1130am. The afternoon sessions will commence after a lunch break and preceding dinner. The afternoon sessions will run from 130pm-530pm most days. Again, this is tentative and some days may run longer/shorter than others. There will most likely be a day or half-day off. I will let you know once we commence pending on our progress. *Hours may change, this is an example from past programs*
830am-1130am – Asana, pranayama, meditation
1130-130pm – Break/lunch/chill/nap/swim
130pm-530pm – Afternoon theory/readings/group discussion/asana clinic

INFO FOR INTERESTED TEACHERS: The style you will be taught to teach is a Vinyasa/Power flow practice, but as you will learn, yoga is yoga is yoga. The teaching begins once the course is over and it is up to you to persevere and commit years on the mat to be a solid, new teacher. It takes time and patience. All education is good education – and if it is your calling…you will know. If it is not your calling, this course will gift you inner-tools that never expire.
