ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
This course is designed for new and experienced students who are looking to immerse in the art and teachings of yoga, spiritual modern-day inquiry, tools and scientific exploration. Many students who do this course go on to be teachers, and many do not as it is purely for self-expansion! It is an intensive experience alongside a like-minded rich community of educators and students. This is a 17-day intensive program held on the quiet Pacific shores of Nicaragua at an eco-surf lodge designed for die-hard surfers as well. The remaining 40 hours will be completed online on weekend mornings throughout November. This will not be a relaxing retreat per say, more so a 17-day body, mind and intellectual intensive.
Over 500 students have graduated from the 200hr program alone since 2010, and over a thousand worldwide have completed educational trainings from the McCabe school of yoga in 50, 100 and 300 hour educational courses. It is my pledge to you to make this program one of the best with academic integrity as well as honouring yogic tradition and its nexus with modernity.
The 200 hour is an enriched educational journey with homage to my lineage of teachers from Sri Tiwari Ji, to my King’s College professors of neuroscience. I am currently completing my Masters, so anticipate referencing to the research into the neuroscience (central nervous system science) of yoga and meditation. The Nica immersion includes a three to four hour daily practice – strong hatha/vinyasa based asana, pranayama, meditation, an overview of yoga history, philosophy, Sanskrit/mantras/lore of chanting, meditation will be strong component as well as the neuroscience of mindfulness based stress reduction. There will be practice teaching, posture clinics, in-depth musculoskeletal and visceral anatomy, subtle body anatomy and neuroanatomy (your nervous system).
Pre-requisite readings include:
- The Bhagavad Gita (Stephen Mitchell)
- Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (BKS Iyengar)
- Anatomy of the Spirit (Carolyn Myss)
- Breath (James Nestor)
- The Great Work of Your Life (Stephen Cope)
- The Brains Way of Healing (Norman Doidge)
- Skill in Action (Michelle Cassandra Johnson)
- You will also receive a course manual and online material. Each book interweaves the above subjects and will teach you a new language surrounding the heart of yoga. There is also a strong anatomy component to this course. There is pre-arrival homework to some readings.
ABOUT LOS CARDONES:
We will be staying in classic Nica-style cabanas on the wild and quiet oceanfront of Los Cardones, Nicaragua. The cabanas are simple, rustic and steps away from the Pacific. Los Cardones is wild and unscathed by tourism and is a low-impact eco-surf lodge that utilizes environmentally considerate practices, an onsite wellspring for all water and cold showers, low-impact electricity, ceiling fans/lights and compostable bathrooms. It is not a five-star resort but this is what makes it special. This is particularly suitable for adventurers and those of you craving an off-the-beaten path experience where the value of a rich orange sunset supersedes the necessity for air conditioning or high end pricing.
Your onsite-accommodation, training and food is included in the final tuition fee. There is the option to rent a range of bigger homes nearby as well and adding on food and tuition separately. You can arrange this privately with Laure Sitton, owner of Los Cardones at: loscardonesecolodge@gmail.com – Please email me first to discuss tuition/food payment as well.
Space is limited onsite. The bungalows are smaller simple cabanas or stilted thatched roof ocean view cabanas shared with one other or solo option. Please advise if you are coming with a friend. Single accommodation is limited.
Sample Day:
630-730am: Breakfast, time for early morning surf or sleep-in
730am-1030 a.m: Asana, pranayama and meditation practice. This is also time for integration of previously learned material. This is three hours of empowered asana, pranayama, mantra/chanting and meditation. The style of yoga taught is a strong hatha/vinyasa pulsing between longer held/static and fluid movements (with many influences of teachings including Ashtanga, Anusara, Ana Forrest, Patrick Creelman). It is a challenging and fun practice with the inclusion of traditional practices, breath-work, mantra and cleansing kriyas.
1030am-1230pm: Break, lunch, surf, rest
1230pm-730pm: Group work, theory, philosophy, history, practice teaching, asana clinic (Please note: There will be small breaks during this period to snack, move around, rest). SUGGESTED CHEAP AIRFARE SITES:
The airport you will fly into is in Managua, Nicaragua. We will then arrange a driver to pick you up (and drop you off). Rental cars are discouraged because once you get to Los Cardones you will not go anywhere else (you’ll see) and the roads in are a bit…off the beaten path! We don’t want you getting lost.
https://www.momondo.ca/ (This is my favourite go-to)
Try a Google Search from your location to Managua and you will find competitive flight prices usually.
Many students come from or fly into Costa Rica and get a drive from Guanacaste (LIR) Airport to Los Cardones, Nicaragua to also find cheap flights or if you want an adventure to Costa Rica first. A driver can also be arranged for this drive (I have done it, it is safe and gorgeous and it is only 3-4 hours of driving and around $200 one way depending on your driver).
